One of the measures announced in the recent mini-budget was the closure of 8 DPI facilities.
The station nearest to us is at Glen Innes which has been researching agriculture in the New England region for over 100 years and has many very important research projects underway now. Contrary to recent press releases by the minister, the facility has a number of research projects which are being jeopardised by the proposed closure - these include a long term crop rotation experiment of some 70 years and pasture species improvement work for both grasses (tall fescue, cocksfoot and tropical grasses for the Slopes areas) and legumes (white clover, birdsfoot trefoil) - this work has implications for sustainability of pastures, dryland salinity in recharge regions and improved profitability of livestock enterprises. There is also important beef cattle research funded by the CRC that is at risk along with many other projects in collaboration with Landcare groups and CMA's.
There will be a protest meeting held at Glen Innes on Thursday at 1.30pm (20th November 2008) at the Glen Innes Town Hall. This meeting has been organised by Councillors from Glen Innes Severn Council. They have arranged for various TV stations and Richard Torbay to attend.
If you believe that agricultural science has an important role to help solve some of the challenges facing farmers in the future - please support us in the fight to save these DPI facilities from closure - not just at Glen Innes but any station which has contributed to agricultural development in the state.

cheers from Lonewood (a concerned farmer who thinks the State government should place a little more priority on those who grow our food - the farmers of this state)
