Formatted for archive, click link to see original version : Powering an electric fence?
We recently wired 1.6 km's of wire around a paddock for 4 calves. Then tired electicfying it with a car battery (my Father-in-Law was insistent that this would work). Guess what.........nothing. Is this a good device to use --> 'Pakton SB2 Solar Energizer'. It says it can do 2km's and is solar powered, but is this brand reputable?

i would look at the Thunderbird Sola2000 if you are wanting a sola powered energizer.
can you get away with a mains powered unit? generaly they are cheeper. if not you could also use a battery powered unit.

Make sure that you have the unit properly hooked up! Make sure that you have a GOOD ground...I always drive a ground rod into the ground at least 5 feet long, and then I soak it with water. Hook up the battery terminal wires, then test the "hot" post of the charger, and see if it is "zapping".
I do not know about your part of the world, but here where I live, the solar panel [only] charges the battery...the battery actually powers the charging unit. So, again, make sure that your charging unit is working before getting too down on the brand..

Hi,
we have been using electric fencing for our miniature calves. we encountered the same problem as you, so we purchased a Thunderbird that said it was meant to less then the cheaper brand and of course once again quality proves better then quantity.
So in other words i would recommend a Thunder. :)
Cheers Michael
