China will take a firmer stance on arable land protection in the next five years to ensure that enough grain is planted to feed its 1.3 billion people. More than 100 zones will be created to protect farmland over the next five years, covering estimated 667,000 hectares, according to land and resources officials. China so far this year has 105.9 million hectares of cultivated land allocated this year, down 2.6 million hectares from last year It is estimated that China requires 109.7 million hectares of cultivated land to feed it future peak population of 1.6 billion people. A worrying tread so far has been the fact that China harvested 450 billion kilograms of crops in 2003, compared with the average 500 billion-kilogram output in the past decade so the government is trying to allocate land now to stop this slide in production. It is possible that China will increase imports of Fertiliser forcing up the price in the short to medium term to try and increase production.

Japan s expected to lifts its ban on US beef imports shortly giving Australian beef exporters and cattle producers a expected price fall, this will place extra strain on rural producers in the short to medium term, one worrying point is feedlotters on the eastern seaboard who have increased cattle numbers on feed in expectation of continued supply arrangements. We have had reports of major super market chains reneging on contracts with suppliers in expectation of a price fall in beef and lamb prices.
