China is battling a possible large scale bout of foot and mouth disease that has so far infected over 10 provinces since February – the ramifications of this outbreak are yet to be fully realised by countries exporting livestock into the country.
China - has been expanding its dairy herd , this may have extreme ramifications if china shifts the blame on to exporters of cattle into the country.
Attched graphs are as follows:
china total cattle stocks, dairy stock and milk consumption all from 1980-2005 YTD.
Chinese village economies are based around the pig industry in china and this will devastate a lot of villages as reports are showing that the disease spread from pig farms to the cattle.
Exporters may fill the void in the short term either with frozen carcasses or live exports however the cost in misery for the local breeders will have a devastating effect.
